The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), on behalf of National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), is requesting approval for an exception to the Buy American Statute (BA). The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), Phoenix Epidemiology Clinical Research Branch, Obesity and Diabetes Clinical Research section (ODCRS) conducts studies investigating the etiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes. The ODCRS needs a new dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan machine to be used to collect data on body composition which are crucial for studies of human metabolism. The DEXA scan is an integral part of meeting the mission of NIDDK to conduct and support medical research and research training and to disseminate science-based information on diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases, nutritional disorders, and obesity; and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases, to improve people’s health and quality of life.
