Procurement Summary
This request is to acquire one (1) Carl Zeiss Axiovert 5 Inverted Digital all-in-one Cell Imaging System Microscope using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for cell counting and cell confluency determination. This unique microscope is a custom configuration from a small business (W.E.L. Instruments) that can aid in research continuation with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) laboratory. This microscope uses Zeiss Labscope Multi Channel, Zeiss Labscope AI cell counting, and Zeiss Labscope AI cell confluency software. It comes with a Surface Pro 9 tablet attached, with Microsoft Windows Pro11, with 256 GB SSD, memory with 16GB, and a wireless Microsoft desktop. This microscope can do single image acquisition as well as multi-channel fluorescence image acquisition of up to 5 channels, with a provision to video recording of live cells. This microscope has a 5MP high resolution camera, long lifetime TL/FL LED illumination , one phase ring for 5x – 40x objective – making the system easy and comfortable to use with minimal user interaction, encoded 6 position nosepiece, 6 position reflector turret that prevent regular filter changes, multichannel overlay of 5 channels, fully automated AI cell counting, fully automated AI cell confluency, and one click solutions for Snap, Video, Multi-channel, Cell Counting & Confluency measurements. This microscope will be used routinely in a NIOSH laboratory for monitoring the 3D culture of airway epithelial cells.
Waiver Rationale Summary
The Zeiss Axiovert 5 All-In-One Cell Imaging System offers multiple assay capabilities that provide essential support for multiple project investigators working on a wide variety of research projects critical to the mission of the NIOSH/CDC. The Zeiss Axiovert 5 All-In-One Cell Imaging System has been used previously in a large number of NIOSH’s very costly research projects over the years. The ability to directly compare previously published research results to ongoing research would be severely impacted if another instrument is substituted.
