Loligo ApS Swim Tunnel Respirometry System

Procurement Summary

National Marine Fisheries Service - Alaska Fisheries Science Center - needs to procure a Loligo Swim Tunnel respirometer and components for aquatic respirometry research to provide real-time monitoring of juvenile fish metabolic processes in response to sea water condition changes. There are no known domestic manufacturers of swim tunnel respirometers. This requirement supports AFSC’s mission requirement to evaluate the effects of climate conditions on the fishery resources of Alaska. Ocean acidification results from increased concentrations of CO2 in the ocean waters resulting in a change in pH that can have negative impacts on the ion-exchange system and respiratory capacities of marine organisms. These impacts may make the organisms more vulnerable to extremes in other aspects of habitat conditions such as high temperatures or low oxygen levels. This procurement will secure the experimental apparatus necessary to examine these critical research questions
