Procurement Summary

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which is an Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease for all people. The NINDS Dendrite Morphogenesis and Plasticity Section (DMPU) applied the Drosophila larval visual circuit and investigates the structural and functional plasticity changes to find the mechanisms underlying the neuronal development. The DMPU is using in-vivo live imaging with the aid of a multiphoton scanning system to study different candidate genes. The primary approach is to understand molecular path to regulate dendrite morphogenesis and structural plasticity, and learn the consequent function change due to deficits on homeostatic neuronal plasticity. To reach the most function of the NINDS government-owned LSM 980 multiphoton system, the Chameleon Discovery NX or equal will enable a high power laser for multiphoton microscopy to make brighter and deeper live imaging possible in the DMPU’s new and ongoing research studies. The purpose of this requirement is to procure one (1) Chameleon Discovery NX or equal with trade-in for the NINDS for replacement due to damage by the flood in Building 35. This tunable femtosecond laser system is designed for multiphoton microscopy and shall be used to provide dual laser power to the NINDS government-owned LSM980 multiphoton system used to take live imaging of Drosophila brain with fluorophore probe to obtain deeper and brighter than usual images when NINDS researchers collect in-vivo data, which is used for analysis dynamic change at the early dendrite development stage.
